LinkedIn has become much more than a means of finding another job. The world’s largest professional social network is now a valuable publishing platform in its own right, which means you should be posting content to LinkedIn on a regular basis. Doing so can boost traffic to your site, as well as increase your profile within your industry – especially if you have a moderate to large following.
In the beginning, it’s nice to think that a committed and engaged audience will just fall into your lap if you reach out to the right people and follow the right steps, but it’s just not that easy. You need to make sure your website is set up the right way and is designed to resonate well with your target market. More on that in my guide to growing a blog.
Consider your resources. If your website traffic has been increasing by 10 percent with blogging alone but you’re now going to start investing in pay-per-click (PPC) ads, you can expect an increase that correlates with the additional spend. If you’re a B2B company, you can expect about a 2.5 percent click-through rate for your ads. The cost of PPC ads is based on the keywords you’re bidding on, who else is bidding on them and how relevant your ads are (known as your quality score). A marketing agency with expertise in demand generation will be able to recommend a budget and set realistic expectations for website traffic based on that budget.
SEO, Search Engine Optimization is defined as, “the process of maximizing the number of visitors to a particular website by ensuring that the site appears high on the list of results returned by a search engine.” For the most part, this is true. (In a nutshell, but using a combination of tools from keywords, content, and other factors that can help you rank well on search engines) For the regular Joe out there, SEO is the process that can help you “get found on Google.”
Historical refreshes of content is a good thing, especially if some of your content has expired. Note, this does not mean re-doing your content; simply refreshing it to bring it current if it isn't already evergreen content. Look at ways you can update outdated content on your site to drive more traffic through visibility on search engines like Google.
When I’m doing research for a piece I’m going to write, I’ll send emails out to influencers who are authorities in the area I’m writing about. I’ll ask them for a quote to include in the blog post, and ask them a single question – this is how I do it, if you’re interested. I don’t worry too much about non-responses or rejections, because as long as a few of them write back, I’ve got a solid contribution for my post. Because they’re authority figures, it not only lends the piece credibility, but if they happen to share the post, I’ll get exposure to their audience as well.
Investing in paid advertising is like upgrading to a 600-HP engine and adding a turbocharger. It will amplify all your efforts and generate web traffic much faster than organic traffic alone, especially for people who are ready to buy. In fact, PPC traffic converts 50 percent higher than organic traffic, and companies make an average of $2 in revenue for every dollar they spend on AdWords, according to Clever Clicks.
Gross, public speaking! But no, seriously. If there’s a conference going on that’s closely related to your niche, do everything you can to get there. I’ll never knock networking online, but there’s something about reaching a targeted, focused, engaged group of people face-to-face that is a whole new level of promotion and networking. As a bonus, you’re sure to run into tons of other people doing the same thing, which means a million opportunities for collaboration.
Imagine you had the opportunity to give a presentation to an auditorium full of potential customers, without having to travel or market the event. With SlideShare, you can. SlideShare is a hosting service for professional content that has 80 million unique visitors per month, 80% of which come from organic search. Sharing presentations on your company and industry can increase website traffic by raising brand awareness and demonstrating your industry expertise and thought leadership.
Brian hello! First off I want to THANK YOU for this fantastic post. I can’t emphasize that enough. I have this bookmarked and keep going through it to help boost our blog. I totally nerded out on this, especially the LSI keywords which made my day. I know, pathetic, right? But when so much changes in SEO all the time, these kinds of posts are so helpful. So thanks for this. So no question – just praise, hope that’s ok 😁
It’s not enough to just share content through social channels – you need to actively participate in the community, too. Got a Twitter account? Then join in group discussions with relevant hashtags. Is your audience leaving comments on your Facebook posts? Answer questions and engage with your readers. Nothing turns people off quicker than using social media as a broadcast channel – use social media as it was intended and actually interact with your fans.
Quora is like Yahoo Answer’s older, much better-looking sibling. People ask questions like, “I’ve started a blog. How can I increase blog traffic?” and people who provide in-depth, clever, and witty answers – like I gave here – are heavily rewarded. That response is what inspired me to update and expand on my advice in that answer today! Oh, and by the way, as of writing this post, my answer there has almost 90,000 views. Not too shabby.
Look at your website traffic analytics for at least one full year. If your website is hosted on a content management system like HubSpot, it should be easy to spot trends in your website traffic. There may be some ebbs and flows if you have a seasonal aspect to your business, but a year’s worth of data will give you a baseline. It’s even better if you have several years’ worth of data so you can see year-over-year growth trends. If your traffic has been increasing about 10 percent from one year to the next, you know a 30 percent increase will be a challenge, but not impossible.
If you haven’t used software like BuzzSumo to check out what your competitors are up to, you’re at a huge disadvantage. These services aggregate the social performance of specific sites and content to provide you with an at-a-glance view of what topics are resonating with readers and, most importantly, making the rounds on social media. Find out what people are reading (and talking about), and emulate that kind of content to bring traffic to your website.
Okay, so that gives you a sense of the general areas that your traffic will come from and how you should go about tracking your traffic. Remember, if you're not tracking the traffic that's coming to your website, you're wasting your time marketing online. When you drive traffic to any site, blog or wherever, you need to understand where it's coming from so that you can scale your efforts.
Pinterest is one of the best ways to get website traffic flowing. By pinning your products and blog content multiple times a week, Pinterest traffic can potentially outperform powerhouses like Facebook. All it takes is for one pin to go viral to get an endless stream of traffic to your website. If you’re sharing a blog post, you can pin all of the images within the post. Why is this impactful? It gives you multiple opportunities to have a pin take off. One of your pictures could potentially outperform the rest. As a result, you could drive even more traffic back to your website. Say you want to promote a product page. You can upload custom pictures to entice click through to your website if the product photos on that page aren’t the most inspiring. To increase website traffic from Pinterest, you can try the Pinoculars app which re-targets visitors on Pinterest.
“It’s all about studying. Studying what people search for in terms of the topic that you are targeting. If there are a lot of searches, you might want to create an article that would cover most of them. If there aren’t a ton of searches around a particular topic, then there isn’t much opportunity to have your page rank for several keywords and bring you a healthy amount of search traffic.”
This is a really creative way to connect with other related brands and influencers, and all get together to chat, educate, and generate new leads. Choose a topic that you’re all interested in and knowledgeable about, and you don’t even need to make it fancy. The best part is that everyone involved will bring some of their own audience, and you can get the attention of people interested in your field.
It’s not enough to produce great content and hope that people find it – you have to be proactive. One of the best ways to increase traffic to your website is to use social media channels to promote your content. Twitter is ideal for short, snappy (and tempting) links, whereas Google+ promotion can help your site show up in personalized search results and seems especially effective in B2B niches. If you’re a B2C product company, you might find great traction with image-heavy social sites like Pinterest and Instagram. Here's more advice on making the most of social media marketing.
