This post and the Skycraper technique changed my mind about how I approach SEO, I’m not a marketing expert and I haven’t ranked sites that monetize really well, I’m just a guy trying to get some projects moving on and I’m not even in the marketing business so I just wanted to say that the way you write makes the information accesible, even if you’re not a native english speaker as myself.
Email marketing is an incredibly useful tool in a variety of ways. It helps you build a stronger relationship with your core audience, and lets you easily market new products or promotions. You can also share news and interesting information with your subscribers, and let them know about new content right away. All of these can have a significant effect on your traffic levels.
Any good party planner knows that before the guests arrive, it’s essential to have an event space that is fully prepared. That means having the punch bowl filled (and already spiked), the balloons ready to fall from the ceiling, the snack table is setup according to all dietary restrictions, etc. You know at the end of the night, it will be scraped clean, but that means you did a good job setting up your party. In the case of SEO, you are the party planner, your website is the event space and search engines are your guests. So, before you start looking to pull traffic, make sure your website’s SEO is in order so it’s ready for search engines.
According to the Shareaholic Traffic Report, 35% of website referral traffic comes from search, compared to 26% from social media. And when it comes to search traffic, the majority is from Google. Everyone loves press. Create a roundup blog post compiling 25 thought leaders in your industry. Find people you admire, people doing innovative things, people you look up to and even the best of your competitors. Include a short synopsis of them, their work and what they are doing that is unique and inspiring. Include a link to their Twitter handle. Once you publish the article send out a unique Tweet @tagging each person with a link to the article. Everyone loves unexpected press. Chances are most of the individuals you mentioned will retweet you and share the article on their social networks driving traffic to your blog and website. By going the extra mile, spreading kindness and giving props to individuals doing good things in your field, it in turn helps you by driving big traffic to your website. That is what I call a win, win.
Facebook is keen to promote streaming video – the success of Twitch.tv has them drooling. This means that Streaming videos are given massive “reach” – more people see them. They’ll show your video to more of your page subscribers, more group members, etc. If the video is good, you’ll get lots of shares and likes, and this can build your audience rapidly.
Ask a marketer or business owner what they’d like most in the world, and they’ll probably tell you “more customers.” What often comes after customers on a business’ wish list? More traffic to their site. There are many ways you can increase traffic on your website, and in today’s post, we’re going to look at 25 of them, including several ways to boost site traffic for FREE.
“It’s all about studying. Studying what people search for in terms of the topic that you are targeting. If there are a lot of searches, you might want to create an article that would cover most of them. If there aren’t a ton of searches around a particular topic, then there isn’t much opportunity to have your page rank for several keywords and bring you a healthy amount of search traffic.”

My company has been working on a large link building project. We’ve already performed extensive keyword research and link analysis and now we’re considering executing an email outreach campaign. However, all the content we’ve created up until this point is geared more towards our target audience as opposed to the key influencers of our target audience. Do you think it would be worth it to try to build backlinks to our existing content or are we better off creating new content that directly appeals to the influencers of our target audience?

Consider your industry. If you’re a niche metal manufacturer, you’re probably thrilled if your website gets 3,000 visitors a month. However, if you’re a national retailer, that number is a sure sign of trouble. Consider what’s realistic given the demand in your industry and your competition. Tools like Alexa and SEMrush will even show you website traffic estimates for your competitors.
Some people will tell you that guest blogging is no longer effective, but with a strategic approach, guest blogging can still be one of the best ways to generate website traffic. The most important thing is to blog on sites that are relevant to your audience so that you generate high-quality traffic. Offer a lead magnet to entice new visitors over to your website, and return the favor by asking other writers to guest post on your site too, then share that content on social media. Don’t limit yourself to written posts either -- podcasts, Instagram takeovers and YouTube guest appearances are all highly effective in 2018 and beyond.
More than 1.9 billion people watch videos on YouTube every month, and 30 million of those are on the platform daily. Create a YouTube channel for your business and fill it with educational, fun, or how-to videos and you're likely to see a boost in website traffic as viewers click through to your site to learn more. You can also embed YouTube videos in the body of your website to keep visitors engaged once they get to your site.

Mentioning brands, articles, and related influencers within a piece is always a great opportunity to distribute content. When I publish a post, I aim to have between 10 and 20 links in the piece, from pull quotes to mentions. When I post, boom, I have 10 to 20 people to email to let them know I featured them. I’ll ask them to share the piece with their followers on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn.
Learning best practices of using target keywords and phrases should be your top priority. Brian, great post as always! Question: Do you consider authority sites (industry portals) a form of “influencer marketing?” e.g. guest blogging, etc? In some niches there are not so many individuals who are influencers (outside of journalists) but there are sites that those in the industry respect. I am in the digital video space and for me one site is actually a magazine that is building a very strong digital presence. Thanks, keep up the good work!
91% of people now look at reviews before choosing a brand. 85% of people trust online reviews like they trust a personal recommendation. The great news is that people expect you to have some bad reviews. In fact, over 50% say they’re suspicious if you have lots of reviews with no negative ones. Most people are more focused on star rating and number of reviews.

5) Post at the right time. Let’s say you want to post in the r/Entrepreneur/ subreddit, but there’s already a post in the #1 spot with 200 upvotes, and it was posted 4 hours ago. If you post at that time, you probably won’t overtake that #1 spot, and you’ll get less traffic. However, if you wait a day, check back, and see that the new #1 spot only has 12-15 upvotes, you’ll have a golden opportunity. It will be much easier for you to hit the #1 spot and get hundreds of upvotes.
Thanks Brian. I’ve had a “a-ha” moment thanks to you! Great advice. I knew that backlinks would improve the organic SEO rankings to our client-targeted landing pages but I never knew it was through getting influencers to backlink blogs. I always just assumed it was great content that users wanted to share with others. It was driving me mad why people love my content but never share enough. Now I know!
No matter how great your website is, it won’t do anything for your business unless people visit it. According to HubSpot’s 2018 State of Inbound report, 61% of marketers say generating website traffic is their top challenge. If your website traffic is lagging, or you just want to increase the number of potential customers who come to your site, try these 12 methods for giving your website traffic a boost.

Thanks for sharing these great tips last August! I’ve recently adopted them and I have a question (that’s kind of connected to the last post): how important would promoting content be when using this strategy? For example, through Google Adwords. As I guess that would depend on the circumstances, but I am trying to discover if there’s a ‘formula’ here. Thanks in advance!
We own multiple websites and have customers that have only purchased from one of them. We started sending out postcards 30 days after customers place orders with any of our websites. These postcards thank them for their purchase and display our other websites that we have as well. It’s actually converted into new sales for us on those other websites that our customers didn’t even know about. And the nice thing is that it is all done through an app and is totally automated and each send is less than $1.00. You really can’t beat that for the extra exposure.
I would like to thank Ross for this AMAZING post. There are too many internet marketers out there struggling to get traffic. How many people out there with mind-blowing websites that the world NEEDS that will never get enough traffic to get their ideas out to the public? How many people stuck at 9 to 5’s struggling to make money online only because they just CAN’T GET TRAFFIC? This is an extremely thoughtful post. The world needs more people who would create an article like this that could help the struggling moms out there trying to make money online.
You probably visit at least a few sites that are relevant to your business on a regular basis, so why not join the conversation? Commenting doesn’t necessarily provide an immediate boost to referral traffic right away, but making a name for yourself by providing insightful, thought-provoking comments on industry blogs and sites is a great way to get your name out there – which can subsequently result in driving more traffic to your own site. Just remember that, as with guest posting, quality and relevance are key – you should be engaging with other people in your niche, not dropping spam links on unrelated websites.
